Laura Lee gave me this card at my baby shower for Lorenzo. We couldn't have known then how the meaning of her words would evolve: that Ryan and I would be the only ones to meet Lorenzo, less than a month after I read this card; that I would hope he did need us as his parents to protect him; and that I would need incredible friends like Laura Lee in the grief. We also couldn't have known then what a heart like this pink balloon, like all 2,000 of the hearts you all have found, would come to mean.
I've hung this card in the room where Lorenzo's little sister, God willing, will sleep safely next year. And play. And laugh. And sing. And be surrounded by hearts like this one so that her brother is always near.
